Types of Dental Emergencies
Teeth are very strong and hard wearing, but they are also vulnerable to decay, injury and trauma. Common causes of dental pain include sports injuries, accidents and falls, trauma through fighting and dental abscesses caused by bacterial infections. Types of dental injury include dental pain, broken teeth, chipped teeth, dislodged fractured teeth and jaw injuries.
What to do in a dental emergency?
Dental emergencies can happen at any time, in any place, so it is a good idea to learn how to deal with a dental emergency situation. It is not normally necessary to seek urgent dental care for a chipped tooth, but if you suspect that you have a broken tooth or you are suffering from severe dental pain or dental pain that is getting gradually worse, ring the practice and ask to see an emergency dentist as quickly as possible. For patients on our dental membership plan we are able to offer complimentary worldwide dental emergency cover allowing you to access dental care wherever you may be – please ask one of our emergency dentist team members for more details.
What should I do if I lose a tooth?
If you are involved in an incident and you lose a tooth, try to find the tooth and store it in a glass of milk or hold it in between your cheek and gum (this is not advised for children as they may risk swallowing it); ring the dental practice as quickly as possible and one of our dentists may be able to save the tooth. If you suffer an accident and you experience pain in your jaw or you suspect that your jaw may be broken, visit the nearest Accident and Emergency department. If you have severe dental pain, arrange to see one of our dentists as quickly as possible; you may have an abscess, which requires urgent treatment.
