I’m so chuffed I wish I had had it done years ago. I would certainly recommend it.

Thank you so much for your warmth and friendliness during my treatment. You all made the whole experience enjoyable with the results and the comments I’ve received. I just can’t thank you enough for my lovely smile 😀

Here at Fresh dental Smile Clinic in York we offer gum contouring treatment for our patients. This procedure can be used to improve the aesthetic proportions of a smile.

The procedure can be used for a wide variety of reasons from treating a ‘gummy smile’, to leveling out the tooth proportions to gum grafting where by we are able to add gum back to areas of gum recession. Our specialist periodontist can advise and guide as to the most suitable course of gum treatment.

Why might I need gum grafting or contouring?

When designing a new smile it is important not just pay attention to the actual tooth but also how the tooth is proportioned compared to the next and gum line which frames the tooth. If you look at our patient pictures below we transformed the smile not just by providing new dental veneers or dental crowns and bridges but by also manipulating the gum line to give a more even, natural beautifully proportioned smile.

How does gum grafting work?

Often patients can have areas of gum recession. These areas need to be carefully monitored and treated in order maintain their health. However, in cases where the gum recession has become advanced we are able to graft, adding extra gum either synthetically or from the patient to repair the defect and greatly improve aesthetics and helping to keep gums healthy.

What is a gummy smile?

A gummy smile is not a medical problem and it does not affect your oral health in any way; however, it can affect the proportions of your smile, which may impact on confidence and self-esteem. A gummy smile occurs when too much gum covers the crown of the teeth, meaning that a large amount of gum tissue is visible when you smile. A gummy smile can make the teeth look shorter and smaller, which can affect the overall look and balance of the smile.

How does the procedure work?

The gum contouring procedure aims to unveil more of the tooth crown by removing very tiny portions of the gum tissue. The procedure is relatively straightforward and without discomfort. One of our highly accomplished dentists will use their skill and experience to gently trim away very tiny pieces of the gum to allow more of the tooth crown to be seen when you smile. The end result is a more aesthetically pleasing, balanced smile.

Although the procedure may sound much more daunting than it actually is, our highly trained dentists have a lot of experience in doing this procedure as part of creating beautiful smiles. If you are concerned about the look of your smile and feel that your teeth look too small and you can see too much gum tissue when you smile, gum contouring could be the ideal solution for you.
