Why People Might Need Orthodontic Treatment?
Lots of folks mistakenly think orthodontic treatment is just for fixing crooked teeth, but in reality, braces can address a variety of dental issues you might not even realise you have. We’ve compiled some of the most common ones below:
- Crooked or misaligned teeth: Orthodontic issues like crooked or misaligned teeth can affect the appearance of the smile and lead to difficulties in chewing, speaking, and maintaining proper oral hygiene.
- Overbite or underbite: When the upper or lower teeth protrude excessively forward or backwards, it can result in an overbite or underbite. These issues can cause problems with bite function and jaw alignment.
- Crowding: Crowded teeth occur when there is insufficient space in the jaw for all the teeth to align properly. This can lead to overlapping or twisted teeth, making it challenging to clean between teeth and increasing the risk of decay and gum disease.
- Spacing: Gaps or spaces between teeth can result from missing teeth or natural gaps in the jaw. These spaces can affect the alignment of neighbouring teeth and compromise the aesthetics of the smile.
- Jaw disorders: Orthodontics may also be necessary to address jaw disorders like temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction, which can cause pain, clicking, or difficulty opening and closing the mouth.
Luckily, we offer a whole choice of orthodontic treatments to address a wide range of issues…

Below is a summary of some of the popular dental brace treatment options
Six Month Smiles
Many people associate orthodontic treatment with having to spend several years wearing unattractive traditional fixed braces.
Using clear or invisible braces and brackets, Six Month Smiles now offers patients the opportunity to have crooked or misaligned teeth straightened in as little as six months, heralding in a new era in cosmetic orthodontics which has since allowed patients to have their teeth aligned within a short time frame.
Teeth Straightening treatment times often average around 6 months. 6MS is mainly suitable for treating mild to moderate dental issues affecting the front 4-6 teeth of your smile. Great for a quick fix of crooked teeth that have bothered you for a while.
To find out if you are suitable for 6 Month Smiles, book a consultation with one of our York orthodontist team today.
STb Social 6 lingual
STb Social 6 lingual braces are attached to the back surfaces of the teeth, meaning that they are invisible braces. The STb Social 6 lingual brace is also a very fast and effective treatment and is often completed within a few months as it focuses on treating mild problems related to the front 4-6 teeth.
STb Social 6 braces can be used to treat mild to moderate orthodontic problems, such as teeth crowding and gappy teeth. As always a full cosmetic dental consultation with one of our cosmetic dentists will be needed to decide whether this is the right treatment for you.
Inman Aligner
The Inman Aligner is a removable brace, with two spring-loaded opposing bars that create forces to squeeze the teeth into place. It’s incredibly quick and can often achieve results in a matter of weeks.
Initially, the appliance can feel a bit bulky and will take some time to acclimatise to. As the dental brace is removable you have a greater level of freedom and can remove the appliance for social events and eating. However, it is recommended that you generally wear the brace for a minimum of between 16-20 hours every day for progressive results.
The Inman Aligner is a good treatment for a number of orthodontic problems, but it is generally designed for simple tipping and tilting movements of front teeth only. The Inman Aligner is also sometimes a good choice for those who have had brace work in the past, but have suffered a relapse.
Invisalign
This is one of the most popular ‘invisible’ orthodontic treatments and involves wearing a series of translucent aligners to gently move your teeth into place. Invisalign is custom-made, so treatment times can vary depending on the complexity of tooth movement required.
Invisalign can be used to treat a range of orthodontic problems, including twisted teeth, misalignment and gaps. A full consultation with one of our team dentists will be required to find out if Invisalign is the right treatment for you.
Benefits of Invisalign
- Discreet design of the aligners
- They can be removed for ease of eating, drinking and cleaning teeth
- More comfortable than traditional braces
- Ease of removal of the aligners enables patients to maintain oral health
Incognito
The Incognito™ brace is the very latest advance in invisible lingual orthodontics and is a dental brace that fits on the inside surface of teeth. Incognito braces or invisible braces are discreet and comfortable and offer the benefits of fixed dental braces.
Users can show off a confident smile as the brace is hidden behind the teeth. Treatment is typically completed within 10 to 24 months.
Short-term Orthodontics for Adults
If you simply want to improve the appearance of the teeth that show when you smile, then you may be suitable for a more conservative approach. Short-term orthodontics is concerned with aligning the front teeth and can be carried out by our dentists who are trained in using these types of systems. As we do not seek to make major changes to the way the teeth bite together, treatment times are often quicker.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Adults and Children benefit from orthodontics?
They certainly can!
In most cases, orthodontics will be carried out in the early teenage years – between 11 and 14, however, adults are increasingly opting to have orthodontic treatment to get that perfect straight smile.
The team at Fresh Dental Smile Clinic are a key provider of orthodontics in York and we encourage parents to have their children’s teeth checked by an orthodontist from as young as 9 years of age, while their mouths and jaws are still growing. It’s never too late to have teeth straightening orthodontic treatment carried out and we find adult orthodontics is a very popular treatment amongst our patients who find the smile transformation benefits life changing.
The benefit of an early orthodontic assessment is that it allows the orthodontists to intercept problems before they get worse. If prudent intervention is not necessary, we can carefully monitor growth and development before starting orthodontic treatment at the appropriate time.
By bringing your children to see our orthodontist from a young age, we can:
- Improve crossbites and prevent jaw displacements further down the line.
- Resolve overcrowding and reduce the need for adult tooth extractions in later orthodontic treatment.
- Preserve space for unerupted teeth.
- Correct protruding teeth to eliminate the risk of injury and trauma when playing sports.
- Enhance the relationship between the upper and lower jaws to encourage normal growth and development.

Does orthodontic treatment hurt?
The team at Fresh Dental Smile Clinic are experts in orthodontics in York, and we use the safest techniques to straighten children's and adult’s teeth.
With that in mind, we can assure you that our orthodontic treatment isn’t overly painful – although, at some stages throughout the treatment, you may experience slight discomfort.
Once you’ve had your braces fitted and adjusted, or you’ve been given your next set of aligners, your teeth can feel a little sensitive as they adjust to their new positions. However, this discomfort should subside within a couple of days and can be treated with over-the-counter pain relief, such as paracetamol.
If it doesn’t and the pain is unbearable, contact the practice immediately.
How long does orthodontic treatment take?
Here at Fresh Dental Smile Clinic, we understand that every smile is unique.
